U.S . Food safety authorities have expanded a recall of peanut butter that was linked to an earlier salmonella outbreak. The Recall has been expanded to include products that were purchased as far back as October 2004. The initial recall was limited to peanut butter sold under the name 'Peter Pan' and purchased since May 2006, and all of Wal-Mart Inc.'s Great Value peanut butter with the batch code 2111. The U.S Food and Drug Administration directed that these peanut butters be discarded. Both peanut butters are manufactured by ConAgra Foods Inc. The recall was based on fear of salmonella contamination.
Out of fear that the outbreak is wider spread than first suspected, ConAgra has said that it is recalling the above mentioned peanut butters to purchases that date back to October 2004.
Salmonella can cause nausea, diarrhea and other ill effects. To date the outbreak of salmonella related to peanut butter has sickened 290 people from 39 states. Luckily, no deaths have been reported.
