Dominican Republic Toxic Coal Ash
Illegal toxic coal ash dumping by U.S. Company has created serious injuries for children and families of the Dominican Republic. Raphaelson & Levine Law Firm has been contacted by many Dominican families regarding this horrible event. In 2003 and 2004, AES Corporation and AES Subsidiaries (â??AESâ??), US- based energy companies with power plants across the globe, unlawfully dumped 100 million pounds of toxic coal ash waste onto a Dominican Republic beach, poisoning the air and water and seriously injuring the residents of the small village of Arroyo Barril, In Samana and surrounding northeast countryside.
Since the dumping, babies have been born with severe birth defects including missing limbs, missing organs, cranial malformations and gastrointestinal deformities. Some of these children have died as a result of their injuries. Today, in addition to the severe birth defects, men, women and children of this proud and struggling community continue to suffer with respiratory illness and skin rashes.
