In America, hospitals and other healthcare facilities are places people go to in hopes these experts can help them to heal and recover. Patients who are admitted to hospitals or treated by physicians have the reasonable expectation their healthcare providers will treat them with dignity during the course of their treatment.

Sadly, significant evidence has surfaced that indicates thousands of patients did not receive this type of treatment. In 2018, the New York Times broke a story outlining how thousands of patients were sexually abused by Dr. Reginald Archibald at Rockefeller University Hospital (RUH). Furthermore, it has been discovered Dr. Archibald used his position of authority to sexually abuse his victims in other settings as well. The majority of the doctor’s victims were aged 5-17.

The attorneys at the law firm of Raphaelson & Levine were horrified to learn of this unthinkable abuse that went on for decades while his employers did nothing to stop his behaviors. No one should ever have to suffer any kind of sexual abuse and, when it happens to children in a setting like a hospital or doctor’s office, it’s unimaginable.

If you, or a loved one, are one of Dr. Archibald’s victims, the lawyers at Raphaelson & Levine can help. We understand the sensitive nature of these horrific acts perpetrated by this doctor and understand you’ve been dealing with the incredible effects of this abuse. We promise to treat your case with the utmost sensitivity as we work to help you receive justice for the pain and suffering you’ve endured.

Sex Abuse Committed by Dr. Reginald Archibald

Dr. Reginald Archibald was a pediatric endocrinologist for 34 years in the New York City area. His primary place of employment was at RUH where he worked from 1941 to 1980 with a brief break from 1946-48. In addition to treating patients, he served as a university professor during this time and performed research studies. In 1980, he became professor emeritus and retained his medical staff privileges until 1982. He was granted senior physician emeritus status in 1987. He died in 2007.

As an expert in childhood growth and maturation, many parents and other medical professionals often turned to Dr. Archibald for help. The doctor’s patients were children and adolescents, suspected to have growth issues or delays in puberty. It was in this capacity Dr. Archibald engaged in sexual abuse. In some instances, the doctor’s actions could be explained due to the sensitive nature of his work, but he often went far outside the scope of research or treatment for his own sexual gratification. During the course of treatment in his examination room, he’d perform sexual acts, engage in unsuitable touching, or take photos where it was completely unnecessary and inappropriate. In examining his male patients, he often had them masturbate or he’d assist them in this act, along with performing other questionable and usual behaviors for a doctor.

Furthermore, Dr. Archibald served at the Madison Square Boys’ Club as a pool doctor. He also offered his medical standing to perform free camp physicals to other camps and facilities in the NYC and Lower Hudson Valley region. As evidence emerges, it’s become clear he used his status as a doctor to seek out additional victims at the club and other camps. All under the guise of offering a charitable service. Information has also surfaced that the doctor brought children to his remote summer cabin in Canada during the 1960s and 1970s telling their parents he was providing them with a “special summer opportunity” where further sexual abuse took place.

The scope of Dr. Archibald’s unimaginable child sexual abuse is not fully known. The majority of his victims appear to be male, female patients have come forward telling of the sexual abuse they suffered. It’s probable thousands of both male and female victims over the course of this doctor’s 34-year long career as an endocrinologist have yet to come forward to tell of their experiences of being sexually abused by him.

The Role of Rockefeller University Hospital in Sexual Abuse of Children

While Rockefeller University Hospital has made acknowledgment of the abuse that took place in their facility, they’ve also largely feigned ignorance about the scope of Dr. Archibald’s sexual abuse. Evidence has surfaced suggesting RUH gave little credence to complaints filed in earlier decades. For instance, in the late 1960s, the New York County District Attorney’s Office reportedly issued a grand jury subpoena to obtain the records of two of Dr. Archibald’s patients. The case was dismissed in 1961.

Additional complaints resurfaced in the 1990s but again, no action was taken. Another complaint was received in 2004. At this time, a former physician in chief at RUH from 1960-74 admitted he had received many complaints from patients, parents, and staff about Dr. Archibald’s techniques during his examinations and treatments. However, being age 93 in 2004, the former physician in chief indicated he didn’t recall specifics.

Over time, it’s clear nothing was done to investigate at any time any allegations emerged against the pediatric endocrinologist. Additionally, evidence shows parents of the doctor’s patients signed releases to allow him to take photos. Yet, all but one of the photographs he took during his examinations seemingly have disappeared. RUH denies having records of many complaints or having the inappropriate photographs in its possession.

Since the New York Times broke the story, hundreds of sex abuse survivors have emerged out of their quiet suffering to share their stories of how a doctor breached the level of trust that should exist between patient and physician. These former patients have come forward to tell the horrific experiences they endured during examinations and treatments taking place at RUH.

The hospital retained the law firm of Debevoise & Plimpton to investigate, and sent out letters to Dr. Archibald’s former patients. It’s unclear how many of these letters were sent. The New York Times report indicated it’s believed the endocrinologist saw 9,000 patients during his tenure at RUH.

If you receive communication from the Rockefeller University Hospital regarding Dr. Reginald Archibald’s abuse of his patients, we strongly recommend you talk to a sexual abuse attorney before responding to them or their defense attorneys.

The Role of the Madison Square Boys Club in Sexual Abuse of Children

The Madison Square Boys Club (now called the Boys and Girls Club ofMadison Square) provided Dr. Archibald with an office at its facility where it served underprivileged boys. In his “pool doctor” role, the endocrinologist met many young boys who he examined, took pornographic photos which he displayed in said office, and also acted inappropriately. During his work there he had the ability to refer participants to his research facility at RUH.

It is believed the Madison Square Boys Club knew about the abuse but did nothing about the exploits taking place at its facility between 1942 to 1967 when the doctor volunteered there. A former basketball coach at this facility during a similar time frame has also since been exposed as a child predator by dozens of former club participants.

New York Child Victims Act

The stories shared by the victim of this doctor’s abuse tell the story of a man who abused his authority to perpetrate child sexual abuse on his patients. The way he framed his work made these children grow up with confusion as to what is appropriate or inappropriate behavior from a medical professional. Many survivors of child sexual abuse have difficulty processing these events and by the time they may have been able to talk about it, the statute of limitations was long passed. A new NYS law gives victims more time.

In February 2019, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the New York Child Victims Act (CVA) into law which took effect August 2019. This law lengthened the statute of limitations for a victim to file criminal charges and civil suits in child sex abuse cases. Victims can now make a civil claim until they are 55 years old, regardless of when the child abuse occurred. Victims of earlier crimes that had expired statutes of limitations can now currently come forward for one year, until August 19, 2020.
